DHARAMSHALA: After years of speculation, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, has disclosed the method for selecting his successor. This decision is believed to be influenced by his advancing age and declining health.
As he approaches his 90th birthday on July 6, the Dalai Lama made this significant announcement on Wednesday during the inaugural day of a global Buddhist conference held in McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh.
Recently returning from the United States after receiving knee treatment, the Dalai Lama affirmed that “the institution of the Dalai Lama will persist,” confirming that the reincarnation process for the 15th Dalai Lama will adhere to traditional protocols.
Although he had previously indicated he would address this matter around the age of 90, insiders suggest that his health issues and increasing pressure from Tibetan communities and Buddhist organizations worldwide may have hastened this announcement.
For over 14 years, following his 2011 statement, the Dalai Lama had refrained from publicly discussing the succession topic. Nevertheless, he acknowledged receiving numerous messages from Tibetans both within and outside Tibet, urging him to ensure the continuation of the institution that has represented Tibetan identity and resilience for centuries.
“In recent years, my health has required more attention, and with age, it becomes even more important to ensure clarity in spiritual and institutional continuity,” the Dalai Lama reportedly conveyed to his close aides.
Authority of Gaden Phodrang Trust
In a statement from his office, the Dalai Lama emphasized that the power to recognize his successor rests solely with the Gaden Phodrang Trust—his official trust—and not with the Chinese government, which has sought to influence the reincarnation process. “No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” the statement stressed.
This announcement not only confirms the continuation of the Dalai Lama lineage but also reinforces the spiritual and cultural traditions that govern the reincarnation process.
The procedures, as outlined in his 2011 guidelines, involve extensive consultations with high lamas from all Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the Tibetan public, and oath-bound Dharma Protectors associated with the Dalai Lama’s lineage. These deeply rooted spiritual norms will be upheld exclusively by the Gaden Phodrang Trust.
The announcement holds global importance, especially as tensions rise over China's insistence that it has the authority to appoint the next Dalai Lama, a claim widely rejected by the Tibetan diaspora and international Buddhist communities.
China's Stance on Reincarnation
Conversely, China has reiterated that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must receive approval from the central government in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process must adhere to traditional methods, including the drawing of lots from a golden urn.
